On the cover of the November 24th, 1951 issue of Saturday Evening Post, Norman Rockwell drew his most recognized drawing of an elderly woman and her grandson in a restaurant, saying grace. Both the woman and the little boy have their heads bowed as a prayer for the food is being offered. Two other patrons, both men, sit quietly by at the same table, observing the event. As you look at this picture you cannot help but wonder what these men are thinking. Rockwell does not draw the men in a posture of disdain. They appear to be caught off-guard, not knowing what to do. When I look at this picture I see the men intently watching. They are spectators in an act of reverential thanksgiving.
It appears to me that the saying of grace is a regular occurrence in the life of this woman. She is not praying to get attention. She is not praying to appear pious. She doesn’t seem to be praying to demean the other patrons. Apparently, whenever she eats she is thankful and recognizes that the source of this blessing is from a loving and caring Heavenly Father.
Prayer should not be a ritual. It should not be a pious demonstration like the one that Jesus spoke of in Matthew 6. He prayed that the Father would give us our daily bread. When he fed the five thousand, he broke the bread and prayed a prayer of thanksgiving. Luke 9:16. Just before the resurrection of Lazarus, Jesus prayed. John 11:41-42. The apostle Paul instructs the Corinthian church about the Lord’s Supper. He tells them that Jesus took the bread and gave thanks for it and then passed it to them to eat. I Corinthians 11:24. Jesus often withdrew from his disciples so that he could pray. Prior to his betrayal he was praying in the Garden of Gethsemane. Luke 22:41-45. When we look at Jesus we will notice that in every facet of his life prayer is prominent. It was not a once a year event. It was not something that was singled out as a monthly happening or a periodic endeavor. Jesus was constantly a man of prayer. Does that describe you? If you want to be like Jesus, you can do so through prayer.
31 Days of Prayer Power, through the month of April is a great time to begin a closer walk with the Lord through the avenue of prayer. Be sure and pick up the schedule this Sunday.
